Tim Davies works for the World Wide Web Foundation as a researcher examining the impacts of web technologies. He has a humanities and social research background, but also works on web technologies, managing the development of a number of open data platforms, and building a series of linked data demonstrators for international development organisations. His PhD looks at the use of open data, drawing on ideas from infrastructure studies and the emerging field of data studies.
Linked Open Data: foundations of a future web of data?
The early designs for the World Wide Web envisaged not a web of documents, but also a 'web of data'. With the rise in availability of open data on the web that vision has started to become a reality, with a growing 'linked open data cloud' now online. But what is linked open data? And how might it shape the future of the web?
Drawing on examples that show the intersection of social and technical action to construct linked data, this talk will provide a brief introduction to key concepts, before taking a critical look at linked open data in practice.
